2 – 4 PM
Each of the children will be presented and given a final fitting for their donated AmTryke, which costs on average $800. Free evaluations will be provided by a certified therapist along with VCU student therapists for children interested in an AmTryke. If funding support is needed, riders may be placed on the REACHcycles “wish list” to receive their own adapted cycles.
“With the support of this great Richmond community, we will provide independence and mobility to numerous area children with disabilities
Our dedicated staff and board members are all volunteers who take a personal interest in seeing these children experience the amazing freedom of riding a bike that we can sometimes take for granted.”
– James Howard, former U.S. Army captain and president of REACHcycles
It’s not just a bike, it’s freedom:
REACHcycles is an all-volunteer 501 (c)(3) organization that addresses a local need for children and veterans with disabilities who are unable to ride traditional bikes, and are unable to afford therapeutic cycles. Our mission is to provide mobility and independence for children and veterans with disabilities through specially adapted AmTryke therapeutic cycles.
Since July 2014, REACHcycles has provided over 140 AmTryke cycles donated to children in the Richmond community who have a variety of disabilities, diseases, and disorders. REACHcycles works closely with local physical therapists, Children’s Hospital of Richmond, Sportable, Sheltering Arms, and many other organizations to identify individuals in the Richmond community who would benefit from a customized AmTryke cycle. These cycles cost an average of $800 (ranging from $400 – $1200) per cycle. Costs vary with the age and size of the individual, and necessary modifications of the adapted tryke are based upon individual needs. Our numerous volunteers come from the backbone of this community with all backgrounds including veterans, active duty soldiers, fireman, policeman, youth groups, therapists, teachers, and many others, to assist in assembling bikes, providing activities, transporting bikes, and fitting/evaluations for children.
